- Senior Fellow and Director of the Cybersecurity Initiative, New America
Ian Wallace is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Cybersecurity Initiative at New America, a Washington DC-based think tank. He also helps oversee the Florida International University/New America Cybersecurity Capacity Building (C2B) Partnership. His research interests range across the field of cybersecurity capacity building, although current focus is on national cybersecurity strategies. Prior to joining New America he spent two years as a Visiting Fellow for Cybersecurity at the Brookings Institution and previously spent a year (2008-09) as a Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.
Ian is a former senior British Ministry of Defence civil servant, where he held a range of strategic planning and policy related positions as well as completing several operational tours as a Political/Policy Advisor - in Kosovo (2001-02) and twice in Iraq (Basra in 2005; Baghdad in 2007-08). From 2009-13 he was the Defence Policy and Nuclear Counsellor at the British Embassy in Washington DC. From 2002-03 he was Head of Policy at the UK Permeant Joint Headquarters (the UK’s operational command HQ) and from 2000-2001 he was the Assistant Private Secretary to the UK Defence Secretary. Ian holds a Master of Arts degree in Ancient & Modern History from Oxford University. He became a dual US/UK citizen in July 2016.
